Problem

A stone is projected vertically upward from the top of a tower with a speed of 24 m s−124\,\text{m s}^{-1}. The top of the tower is 20 m20\,\text{m} above the ground. Take the downward direction as positive and g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}. (i) Find the time taken by the stone to reach its highest point. (ii) Calculate the maximum height attained by the stone measured from the point of projection. (iii) Determine the speed with which the stone strikes the ground at the base of the tower.
