Problem
A straight, light, conducting rod AB of length l rests on two smooth, horizontal, conducting rails that are connected through a galvanometer G. The rails are placed in a uniform magnetic field that is directed vertically downward.
parts:
(i) State Lenz’s law.
(ii) The rod is pulled steadily to the right with velocity v. Predict the direction of the induced current in the circuit and label the polarities at A and B. Justify your answer on the basis of energy considerations.
(iii) Explain qualitatively how the mechanical energy spent in pulling the rod is converted into another form of energy in the circuit.
