Problem

Three points are given by A(1, 2, −1)A(1,\,2,\,-1), B(4, 8, 5)B(4,\,8,\,5) and C(7, 14, k)C(7,\,14,\,k) where kk is a real parameter. (i) Find the value of kk for which the vectors AB→\overrightarrow{AB} and AC→\overrightarrow{AC} are parallel. (ii) For the value of kk obtained in part (i), prove that the points A, BA,\,B and CC are collinear and specify whether BB lies between AA and CC. (iii) Determine the ratio in which point BB divides the line segment ACAC. (Express the ratio as AB:BCAB:BC.)
