Problem

Consider the reciprocal function f(x)=1xf(x)=\dfrac{1}{x}, defined for x≠0x\neq0. Answer the following questions. (i) State the sign of f(x)f(x) when x>0x>0 and when x<0x<0. (ii) Using limit notation, write four separate statements describing the behaviour of f(x)f(x) as: (a) x→0+x\to0^{+}, (b) x→0−x\to0^{-}, (c) x→+∞x\to+\infty, (d) x→−∞x\to-\infty. (iii) Explain how the limit statements obtained in part (ii) describe the position of the graph of y=1xy=\dfrac{1}{x} with respect to the coordinate axes.
