Problem

A cubic container is filled with gas at an internal pressure of 1.8×105 Pa1.8\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}. Two opposite faces are movable circular pistons. Piston A has area 0.040 m20.040\,\text{m}^{2} and Piston B has area 0.030 m20.030\,\text{m}^{2}. Atmospheric pressure outside the container is 1.0×105 Pa1.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the outward force exerted by the gas on each piston. (b) Taking into account the atmospheric pressure acting inward on the outer sides of the pistons, determine the magnitude and direction (toward the interior or the exterior of the container) of the net force on the pair of pistons.
