Problem

Water flows steadily through a horizontal pipeline which narrows smoothly from an internal diameter of 5.0 cm to 2.5 cm. At the wider section the speed of water is 1.5 m s−11.5\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} and the gauge pressure is 1.8×105 Pa1.8\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}. Take ρwater=1000 kg m−3\rho_{\text{water}} = 1000\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}. (i) Determine the speed of water in the narrower section. (ii) Calculate the gauge pressure in the narrower section.
