Problem

A triangle has two known sides 6 cm6\,\text{cm} and 8 cm8\,\text{cm}. When an equation is set up to determine the third side, the solutions obtained are x=10x=10 and x=−4x=-4. (i) State clearly why one of these roots cannot represent a valid side length. (ii) Justify, with reason, which root must be chosen for the length of the third side.
