Problem

A straight horizontal copper wire of length 0.50 m and mass 10 g is placed at right angles to a uniform magnetic field of 0.20 T. (i) Calculate the magnitude of current that must be passed through the wire so that the magnetic force just supports its weight and the wire remains in equilibrium. (ii) If the current in the wire is suddenly doubled while all other conditions remain unchanged, determine the net acceleration of the wire immediately after the change. Neglect air resistance.
