Problem
A 5.0kg crate is placed on a rough plane that makes a 25∘ angle with the horizontal. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction between the crate and the surface are μs=0.40 and μk=0.30, respectively. The acceleration due to gravity is g=9.8ms−2.
(1) Part (a)
Draw a complete free-body diagram for the crate. Do not resolve forces into components on the diagram itself.
(2) Part (b)
Calculate the magnitude of the normal force exerted on the crate by the plane.
(3) Part (c)
Determine the maximum possible static friction force and compare it with the component of the crate’s weight that is parallel to the plane. State whether the crate remains at rest or begins to slide.
(4) Part (d)
If the crate slides, find its acceleration down the plane. If it does not slide, state its acceleration and justify your answer.
