Problem

A municipality stores water in an overhead cylindrical tank placed on a 15 m15\,\text{m} high tower. The tank holds 50 000 L50\,000\,\text{L} of water when full. (a) Convert the volume of water in the tank to its mass, taking the density of water as 1 g cm−31\,\text{g}\,\text{cm}^{-3}. (b) Calculate the total potential energy possessed by the full tank of water with respect to ground level. (c) When the water is supplied to households, the tank is completely emptied in 30 min30\,\text{min}. Assuming no losses, determine the average power delivered by the falling water during this period. (d) In practice only 80%80\% of the energy calculated in part (b) is effectively utilised due to friction in the pipes. Re-calculate the average useful power actually obtained.
