Problem

Two different ideal gases are placed, one at a time, into the same rigid container attached to the same pressure sensor. For each gas, pressure measurements are made at various Celsius temperatures, and a linear regression is performed. The resulting equations are: Gas A: PA=0.360 T+12.0P_{A}=0.360\,T+12.0 (kPa) Gas B: PB=0.337 T+11.5P_{B}=0.337\,T+11.5 (kPa) In both equations, TT is the temperature in ∘C^{\circ}\text{C} and PP is the absolute pressure in kPa. (a) For each gas, calculate the Celsius temperature at which the pressure would extrapolate to zero. (b) Compute the average of the two temperatures obtained in part (a). (c) The pressure sensor is later found to read +12.0 kPa+12.0\,\text{kPa} even when evacuated. Recalculate the absolute zero temperature for Gas A after correcting for this offset, and explain each step of your reasoning. (d) Discuss which gas’s data (A or B) is less sensitive to the sensor’s offset error and justify your answer quantitatively.
