Problem

Two charged particles of identical charge magnitude qq but different masses m1m_1 and m2m_2 (m2>m1m_2 > m_1) start from rest and are accelerated through the same potential difference VV. (i) Show that the ratio of their de Broglie wavelengths is λ1λ2=m2m1\displaystyle \frac{\lambda_1}{\lambda_2} = \sqrt{\frac{m_2}{m_1}}. (ii) A deuteron (md=3.34×10−27 kgm_d = 3.34\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg}, q=eq = e) and an electron (me=9.1×10−31 kgm_e = 9.1\times10^{-31}\,\text{kg}, q=eq = e) are each accelerated through 500 V500\,\text{V}. Using the above result, determine the ratio λe/λd\lambda_e / \lambda_d. (iii) Comment briefly on why heavy charged particles are more suitable than electrons for probing very small distances when accelerated through the same potential.
