Problem

For one mole of a real gas, a simplified form of the Van der Waals equation is written as (p+aV2)(V−b)=RT,\Bigl(p+\frac{a}{V^{2}}\Bigr)(V-b)=RT, where pp is pressure, VV is molar volume, TT is absolute temperature, RR is the universal gas constant, and aa and bb are empirical constants. (i) Show by dimensional reasoning that the product pVpV has the same dimensions as RTRT. (ii) Determine the dimensions of the constant aa so that the term a/V2a/V^{2} is compatible with pressure. (iii) Determine the dimensions of the constant bb so that (V−b)(V-b) can be algebraically combined with VV. (iv) Using your results, explain why the form (p+a/V2)(V−b)=RT(p+ a/V^{2})(V-b)=RT satisfies the requirement of dimensional homogeneity.
