Problem

Point charges are placed at the four corners of a square ABCDABCD of side 10 cm10\,\text{cm} lying in the xyxy-plane with sides parallel to the axes. Let the centre of the square be the origin OO. The charges are assigned as follows (taken in order A→B→C→DA \to B \to C \to D clockwise): +8 μC+8\,\mu\text{C} at A(−5 cm, +5 cm)A( -5\,\text{cm},\,+5\,\text{cm}), −5 μC-5\,\mu\text{C} at B(+5 cm, +5 cm)B(+5\,\text{cm},\,+5\,\text{cm}), +8 μC+8\,\mu\text{C} at C(+5 cm, −5 cm)C(+5\,\text{cm},\,-5\,\text{cm}), and −5 μC-5\,\mu\text{C} at D(−5 cm, −5 cm)D(-5\,\text{cm},\,-5\,\text{cm}). (a) Determine the xx-component and the yy-component of the net electric field at the centre OO. (b) Hence obtain the magnitude of the net electric field at OO and the angle it makes with the positive xx-axis. (c) All four charges are now doubled in magnitude while their positions remain unchanged. Without repeating the entire calculation, state how the magnitude of the net electric field at OO will change and give a brief justification.
