Problem

For a real constant aa, define the function ra(x)={x2−a2x−a,x≠a,k,x=a,r_a(x)=\begin{cases} \dfrac{x^{2}-a^{2}}{x-a}, & x\ne a,\\ k, & x=a,\end{cases} where kk is a real number to be chosen. (1) Part 1: (a) Determine lim⁡x→ara(x)\displaystyle \lim_{x\to a} r_a(x) in terms of aa. (2) Part 2: (b) Find the value of kk that makes rar_a continuous at x=ax=a. Show all steps clearly. (3) Part 3: (c) Prove that, with the value of kk found in part (b), the function rar_a is continuous for all real numbers xx. Your argument should address the continuity on (−∞,a)(-\infty,a), at aa, and on (a,∞)(a,\infty) separately.
