Problem

A biomedical device operates from a single battery whose emf is labeled 12.0 V. When the device is switched off, a high-impedance voltmeter connected across the battery reads 12.0 V. When the device is switched on and draws a current of 0.600 A, the same voltmeter now reads 10.8 V. (1) Determine the internal resistance of the battery. (2) The device’s electronic circuitry can tolerate a minimum operating voltage of 10.0 V. Calculate the maximum current the device can safely draw before it reaches this lower voltage limit. (3) For the operating condition in part (a), compute the percentage of the total power produced by the battery that is dissipated inside the battery itself.
