Problem

The coefficients of linear expansion for three metals are: Aluminium   α=2.3×10−5 K−1\;\alpha=2.3\times10^{-5}\,\text{K}^{-1}, Brass   α=1.8×10−5 K−1\;\alpha=1.8\times10^{-5}\,\text{K}^{-1} and Steel   α=1.2×10−5 K−1\;\alpha=1.2\times10^{-5}\,\text{K}^{-1}. (i) For each metal, calculate its superficial expansion coefficient. (ii) Arrange the metals in descending order of their tendency for area expansion. (iii) A square sheet of side 2.0 m2.0\,\text{m} made of each metal is heated from 25 ∘C25\,^{\circ}\text{C} to 75 ∘C75\,^{\circ}\text{C}. Determine the increase in area for every sheet, stating your results to three significant figures.
