Problem

An object of weight WW is suspended from a ceiling by two light strings. One string makes an angle α\alpha with the horizontal to the left of the object and the other makes an angle β\beta with the horizontal to the right. The object remains at rest. (i) Resolve the forces acting on the object along horizontal and vertical directions and hence derive expressions for the tensions T1T_1 and T2T_2 in the two strings entirely in terms of WW, α\alpha and β\beta. (ii) Using your result, calculate T1T_1 and T2T_2 when W=180 NW = 180\,\text{N}, α=40∘\alpha = 40^{\circ} and β=30∘\beta = 30^{\circ}.
