Problem

A parallel-plate capacitor of plate area AA and separation dd is completely filled with a homogeneous dielectric material of relative permittivity κ\kappa. The plates carry equal and opposite free charges ±Q\pm Q. (i) Taking the surface charge density on the plates as σ=Q/A\sigma = Q/A, derive an expression for the magnitude of the electric field inside the dielectric in terms of σ\sigma, ε0\varepsilon_0 and κ\kappa. (ii) Hence obtain the potential difference VV between the plates and derive the expression C=κε0AdC = \kappa\varepsilon_0\dfrac{A}{d} for the capacitance. (iii) The capacitor described above has A=200 cm2A = 200\,\text{cm}^2, d=2 mmd = 2\,\text{mm} and is filled with glass of κ=5\kappa = 5. Calculate its capacitance in microfarads (μF\mu\text{F}).
