Problem

For all real numbers xx in the domain of sec⁡x\sec x, the derivatives of sec⁡x\sec x exhibit a recurring structural pattern. (1) Compute ddx(sec⁡x)\dfrac{d}{dx}\bigl(\sec x\bigr) and d2dx2(sec⁡x)\dfrac{d^{2}}{dx^{2}}\bigl(\sec x\bigr), writing each derivative in factored form that isolates a single sec⁡x\sec x factor. (2) Assume that for some positive integer kk, the kkth derivative of sec⁡x\sec x can be written in the form sec⁡x Pk(tan⁡x)\sec x\,P_k\bigl(\tan x\bigr), where PkP_k is a polynomial in tan⁡x\tan x with integer coefficients. Derive an explicit expression for the (k+1)(k+1)st derivative in terms of sec⁡x\sec x and tan⁡x\tan x, and hence give an algebraic relation connecting Pk+1P_{k+1} and PkP_k. (You need not determine the full polynomial.) (3) Using your work in part (b), prove that for every positive integer nn there exists a polynomial PnP_n with integer coefficients such that dndxn(sec⁡x)=sec⁡x Pn(tan⁡x).\frac{d^{n}}{dx^{n}}\bigl(\sec x\bigr)=\sec x\,P_n\bigl(\tan x\bigr). Clearly state the logical structure of your argument. (4) State P3(t)P_3(t) and P4(t)P_4(t) explicitly by direct calculation, and verify that each satisfies the relation established in part (b).
