Problem

A body is projected vertically upward from ground level with an initial velocity uu. Ignore air resistance. (i) Derive an expression for the time tmaxt_{\text{max}} taken by the body to reach its maximum height. (ii) Hence obtain an expression for the total time of flight TT of the body before it returns to the point of projection. (iii) A table-tennis ball is projected upward with u=12 m s−1u=12\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} on (a) the Earth, where gE=9.8 m s−2g_{\text E}=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}, and (b) the Moon, where gM=1.62 m s−2g_{\text M}=1.62\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. Using your result from part (ii), compute the ratio TMTE\dfrac{T_{\text M}}{T_{\text E}} of the times of flight on the Moon and on the Earth.
