Problem

An empty hollow cube is to be fabricated from uniform brass sheets. The external edge of the cube is 12 cm12\,\text{cm} and the brass sheet everywhere has a thickness of 1 cm1\,\text{cm}. The density of brass is 8.4 g cm−38.4\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}. Brass costs ₹ 350\text{₹}\,350 per kilogram. The cube is later placed in a tank of glycerine whose density is 1.26 g cm−31.26\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}. (i) Calculate the volume of brass required to make the hollow cube. (ii) Determine the mass of brass used. (iii) Find the total cost of the brass sheet needed. (iv) State, with supporting calculations, whether the empty cube will float or sink in glycerine.
