Problem

A cylinder contains 1.501.50 mol of an ideal gas at a temperature of 320 K320\,\text{K} and an initial volume of 2.50 L2.50\,\text{L}. The gas undergoes a reversible isothermal expansion during which it absorbs 3.45 kJ3.45\,\text{kJ} of heat from a heat reservoir. (i) Calculate the final volume attained by the gas after the expansion. (ii) The gas is now brought back reversibly and isothermally to its original state. Determine the work done by the gas in this return step and hence the net work done over the complete cycle. (iii) Using your results, state the net heat absorbed over the complete cycle and comment on the significance of your answer with respect to the first law of thermodynamics.
