Problem

A network consists of two rectangular loops that share a single resistor R3=3 ΩR_3 = 3\,\Omega. • Left loop: a battery E1=12 V\mathcal E_1 = 12\,\text{V} (positive terminal at the top) is in series with a resistor R1=6 ΩR_1 = 6\,\Omega. • Right loop: a battery E2=9 V\mathcal E_2 = 9\,\text{V} (positive terminal at the top) is in series with a resistor R2=6 ΩR_2 = 6\,\Omega. The lower ends of the two batteries are joined together at a common junction. The upper end of R1R_1 is connected to the upper end of R2R_2 by the resistor R3R_3, so that the three resistors and the two sources form two closed loops with one side shared. Calculate the current through each of the three resistors and state the direction of each current with respect to downward flow through that resistor.
