Problem
A neutral conducting sphere C is suspended by an insulating thread. A negatively charged rod is brought close to, but does not touch, sphere C. While the rod remains in position, sphere C is briefly connected to ground with a wire. The wire is removed first, and then the rod is withdrawn far away. Determine the sign of the net charge left on sphere C after the rod has been removed, and state whether sphere C would be attracted to or repelled by the rod if the rod were brought near again.
