Problem

A gas undergoes a cyclic change represented by three straight-line segments joining the following points on a PP–VV diagram: A (0.010 m30.010\,\text{m}^3, 2.0×105 Pa2.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}), B (0.030 m30.030\,\text{m}^3, 2.0×105 Pa2.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}), and C (0.020 m30.020\,\text{m}^3, 1.0×105 Pa1.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}). The gas moves sequentially A →\to B →\to C →\to A. (i) Compute the work done during each leg of the cycle. (ii) Hence calculate the net work done over one complete cycle. State clearly whether the work is done by the gas or on the gas. (iii) Using your result and the First Law of Thermodynamics, state the magnitude and sign of the net heat exchanged with the surroundings in one full cycle.
