Problem

The space between the plates of a parallel-plate capacitor of plate area AA is completely filled by two dielectric slabs placed one after the other (in the direction of the field). The first slab has thickness d1d_1 and relative permittivity κ1\kappa_1, while the second slab has thickness d2d_2 and relative permittivity κ2\kappa_2. (a) Derive an expression for the effective capacitance of the arrangement in terms of ε0, A, d1, d2, κ1\varepsilon_0,\,A,\,d_1,\,d_2,\,\kappa_1 and κ2\kappa_2. (b) Show that if κ1=κ2\kappa_1 = \kappa_2, the expression reduces to that of a single slab of thickness (d1+d2)(d_1+d_2). (c) For A=150 cm2A = 150\,\text{cm}^2, d1=0.5 mmd_1 = 0.5\,\text{mm}, d2=0.8 mmd_2 = 0.8\,\text{mm}, κ1=4\kappa_1 = 4 and κ2=6\kappa_2 = 6, compute the numerical value of the capacitance.
