Problem

A steel cylinder contains 16 g16\,\text{g} of oxygen gas at 400 K400\,\text{K}. The gas is allowed to expand reversibly and isothermally, doing 2.50 kJ2.50\,\text{kJ} of work. (i) Determine the number of moles of oxygen present in the cylinder. (Relative molar mass of oxygen =32 g mol−1=32\,\text{g\,mol}^{-1}.) (ii) If the initial volume of the gas was 2.0 L2.0\,\text{L}, calculate its final volume after the expansion. (iii) Comment on whether the expansion described above was carried out by the gas or on the gas, giving a brief justification.
