Problem

A cylindrical metallic rod has radius 1.0 cm1.0\text{ cm} and length 25 cm25\text{ cm}. One end of the rod is placed into a large chunk of ice at 0 ∘C0\text{ }^{\circ}\text{C} and the other in boiling water at 100 ∘C100\text{ }^{\circ}\text{C}. The thermal conductivity of the rod is 350 W m−1 K−1350\text{ W m}^{-1}\text{ K}^{-1}. Estimate how long it will take to melt 1 g1\text{ g} of ice. It takes about 334 J334\text{ J} to melt 1 g1\text{ g} of ice at 0 ∘C0\text{ }^{\circ}\text{C}.
