Problem

A delivery boy starts from his shop S which is taken as the origin for the first part of the journey. He walks 600 m600\,\text{m} due east and then 800 m800\,\text{m} due north to reach a customer’s house H. A street lamp L is located 200 m200\,\text{m} east of the shop S and exactly in line with it (that is, along the east–west road). Taking north and east as the positive yy- and xx-directions respectively, answer the following: (i) With respect to the original origin S, write the xx- and yy-coordinates of the house H. (ii) Determine the magnitude of the displacement from S to H. (iii) Now choose the street lamp L as the new origin. Write the new xx- and yy-coordinates of the house H relative to L. (iv) Calculate the magnitude of the displacement from L to H and comment on whether it is the same as in part (ii).
