Problem

An electric scooter uses a battery pack rated at 48 V48\,\text{V}, 20 Ah20\,\text{Ah}. While cruising on level ground the motor requires 250 W250\,\text{W}, but during uphill travel it needs 600 W600\,\text{W}. A typical journey consists of 85 % cruising and 15 % uphill motion. The combined efficiency of the battery and motor system is 85 % (i.e. only 85 % of the chemical energy stored is converted into useful electrical power at the motor terminals). (i) Calculate the total energy stored in the fully charged battery pack. (ii) Determine the effective average electrical power consumed by the motor during the journey described. (iii) Estimate the total time for which the scooter can operate on such journeys before the battery is fully discharged.
