Problem

At point A near the pole of a bar magnet, 10 magnetic field lines are found to cross an imaginary square surface of area 2 cm22\,\text{cm}^2. At point B farther away on the axis of the same magnet, only 4 field lines cross an identical square surface. (i) Assuming that the magnetic field strength is proportional to the number of field lines crossing per unit area, calculate the ratio BABB\dfrac{B_A}{B_B} of the magnetic field strengths at points A and B. (ii) Which point, A or B, lies closer to the pole of the magnet? Give a reason based on your calculation.
