Problem

(a) Define the coefficient of cubical (volume) expansion for a substance. (b) An ideal gas is kept at constant pressure. Show that its coefficient of cubical expansion is equal to the reciprocal of its absolute temperature T0T_{0}. (c) Without doing any numerical calculation, explain whether the coefficient of cubical expansion of an ideal gas at 300 K300\,\text{K} is larger or smaller than that of common metals whose linear expansion coefficient is of the order 10−5 K−110^{-5}\,\text{K}^{-1}. Give a brief reason for your answer.
