Problem

A ball is dropped from rest from a height of 20 m20\,\text{m} both on the Earth and on the Moon. Take gEarth=9.8 m/s2g_{\text{Earth}} = 9.8\,\text{m/s}^{2} and gMoon=1.63 m/s2g_{\text{Moon}} = 1.63\,\text{m/s}^{2}. Air resistance may be neglected in both cases. (i) Calculate the speed with which the ball strikes the ground on the Earth. (ii) Calculate the speed with which the ball strikes the ground on the Moon. (iii) Find the ratio of the two speeds obtained in parts (i) and (ii). (iv) Give one reason for the difference in the speeds, even though the ball is released from the same height in both situations.
