Problem

A climber carries a 10 kg10\,\text{kg} backpack to the top of a mountain 3 km3\,\text{km} above sea level. Take Earth’s radius RE=6.4×106 mR_{\mathrm E}=6.4\times10^6\,\text{m} and g=9.8 N kg−1g=9.8\,\text{N kg}^{-1} at sea level. (i) Calculate the gravitational field strength g′g^{\prime} at the mountain top. (ii) Hence determine the weight of the backpack at the summit.
