Problem

A jogger runs on a moving walkway in an airport. The walkway carries objects 2.0 m ⁣⋅ ⁣s−12.0\,\text{m}\!\cdot\!\text{s}^{-1} toward the west relative to the stationary floor. Relative to the surface of the walkway, the jogger maintains a steady 3.0 m ⁣⋅ ⁣s−13.0\,\text{m}\!\cdot\!\text{s}^{-1} speed toward the east. Take east as the +x+x-direction. (a) Determine the jogger’s velocity (magnitude and direction) relative to the airport floor. (b) Determine the velocity of the walkway relative to the jogger. Explain how this value is obtained from the information given in the problem. (c) An observer standing on the floor marks two points 30 m30\,\text{m} apart along the floor’s tiles. Calculate the time it takes the jogger to travel between the marks as measured by this observer.
