Problem

A helium balloon of weight 30 N30\,\text{N} is held stationary in air by a light vertical string. The buoyant force acting upward on the balloon due to displaced air is 24 N24\,\text{N}. Answer the following: (a) Taking the upward direction as positive, write an algebraic equation representing the condition for equilibrium of the balloon. (b) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the force exerted by the string on the balloon to satisfy the condition in part (a). (c) If the force exerted by the string is accidentally reduced to 4 N4\,\text{N}, find the magnitude and direction of the net force acting on the balloon and predict the resulting motion.
