Problem

A brass container whose coefficient of cubical expansion is 54×10−6 K−154\times10^{-6}\,\mathrm{K^{-1}} is completely filled with 500 cm3500\,\mathrm{cm^{3}} of turpentine at 20 ∘C20\,^{\circ}\mathrm C. When the temperature is raised uniformly to 60 ∘C60\,^{\circ}\mathrm C, 12 cm312\,\mathrm{cm^{3}} of turpentine overflows. (i) Calculate the apparent coefficient of cubical expansion of turpentine in the brass container. (ii) Hence determine the real coefficient of cubical expansion of turpentine.
