Problem

Consider the vertically shifted modulus function gk(x)=∣x∣+kg_{k}(x)=|x|+k defined on R\mathbb R. (i) Explain how the constant k∈Rk\in\mathbb R affects the minimum value of gk(x)g_{k}(x). (ii) Hence describe the range of gk(x)g_{k}(x) for the cases: (a) k>0k>0, (b) k=0k=0, (c) k<0k<0. (iii) For k=−3k=-3, justify whether gk(x)g_{k}(x) is onto R\mathbb R when viewed as a function from R\mathbb R to R\mathbb R.
