Problem

Let k>1k>1 be a fixed constant. Region AA is bounded above by y=kf(x)y=kf(x), below by the xx-axis, and on the sides by x=ax=a and x=bx=b with 0<a<b0<a<b. Region BB is bounded above by y=f(x)y=f(x), below by the xx-axis, and on the sides by x=kax=ka and x=kbx=kb. Both regions are revolved about the xx-axis, producing solids with volumes VAV_A and VBV_B, respectively. Assume ff is continuous and non-negative on the larger of the two intervals. (a) Decide whether VAV_A is less than, equal to, or greater than VBV_B. Support your decision with clear qualitative reasoning rather than explicit calculation. (b) State one specific property of the disc cross-sections that guarantees your answer in part (a) remains valid for every continuous non-negative choice of ff. (c) Identify a non-trivial function ff and constants a, b, ka,\,b,\,k (with k>1k>1) for which VAV_A and VBV_B are equal. Explain why equality occurs for your example.
