Problem

Two identical point masses, each of mass 1.0 kg, are fixed on a frictionless horizontal track along the x-axis. One mass is located at x = −0.50 m and the other at x = +0.50 m. (1) Without performing any explicit numerical calculation, state the x-coordinate of the center of mass of this two-particle system. (2) Describe qualitatively why the center of mass is located at the coordinate you stated in part (a). Your explanation should refer to the arrangement and equality of the masses. (3) The 1.0 kg mass at x = +0.50 m is replaced by a 2.0 kg mass positioned at the same coordinate, while the mass at x = −0.50 m remains unchanged. Predict whether the center of mass of the new two-particle system will lie to the left of the origin, at the origin, or to the right of the origin. (4) Provide a clear qualitative justification for your prediction in part (c), referencing how the distribution of mass affects the overall balance of the system.
