Problem

During a laboratory experiment an ideal gas is found to obey the relation PVn=constantP V^{n}=\text{constant} while it is taken from state 1 to state 2. The measured values are: P1=1.0×105 Pa,  V1=0.020 m3P_1=1.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa},\;V_1=0.020\,\text{m}^3 and P2=2.24×105 Pa,  V2=0.010 m3P_2=2.24\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa},\;V_2=0.010\,\text{m}^3. (a) Calculate the numerical value of the exponent nn for this process, showing all steps of your working. (b) Compare the obtained value of nn with the values n=1n=1 (isothermal) and n=γn=\gamma (adiabatic, with γ≈1.67\gamma\approx1.67 for a monatomic gas). State which type of process the experiment most closely represents and justify your answer. (c) Briefly explain two practical factors in an experimental setup that could lead to a value of nn lying between 1 and γ\gamma.
