Problem

A hollow spherical shell is made of brass. The outer diameter of the shell is 10 cm10\,\text{cm} and the inner diameter is 8 cm8\,\text{cm}. The density of brass is 8.4 g cm−38.4\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}. (a) Calculate the volume of brass present in the shell in cm3\text{cm}^3. (b) Find the mass of the shell in kilograms. (c) Determine its weight in newtons, taking g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (d) The density of water is 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. Will the brass shell float or sink in water? Show your calculation clearly.
