Problem
Two experimental configurations are built using an ideal battery of emf V and identical filament bulbs, each with operating resistance R.
• Configuration I: A single bulb is connected directly across the battery terminals.
• Configuration II: Two identical bulbs are connected to the same battery (scenario IIA: the bulbs are wired in series; scenario IIB: the bulbs are wired in parallel).
Ignore any change in bulb resistance with temperature for this analysis.
(a) For scenario IIA (series connection), derive an algebraic expression for the power delivered to each bulb in terms of V and R.
(b) For scenario IIB (parallel connection), derive an algebraic expression for the power delivered to each bulb in terms of V and R.
(c) Using your results from parts (a) and (b), express the brightness of a single bulb in each scenario as a ratio to the brightness of the bulb in Configuration I. State which configuration produces the brightest bulbs and provide a physical explanation based on your algebraic results.
