Problem

A hydrogen atom in its ground state is to be ionised by monochromatic radiation. (i) Calculate the minimum energy (in eV) that the radiation must supply to a ground-state hydrogen atom. (ii) Determine the corresponding minimum frequency of the radiation. (iii) Find the longest wavelength that can bring about this ionisation. Use h=6.63×10−34 J sh=6.63\times10^{-34}\,\text{J s}, c=3.0×108 m s−1c=3.0\times10^{8}\,\text{m s}^{-1} and 1 eV=1.6×10−19 J1\,\text{eV}=1.6\times10^{-19}\,\text{J}.
