Problem
A wooden block of mass 2 kg is on a horizontal surface. Three horizontal forces act on it: a tension of 12 N to the right, a frictional force of 4 N to the left, and a push of 8 N to the left.
(i) Compute the net horizontal force on the block and state whether the forces are balanced or unbalanced.
(ii) If the 8 N push to the left is suddenly removed while the other two forces remain, calculate the new net horizontal force.
(iii) Using your answer in (ii), find the magnitude and direction of the block’s acceleration.
