Problem
Singly ionised calcium ions (Ca+, charge +e, mass 6.7×10−26kg) are projected into mutually perpendicular electric and magnetic fields, the fields themselves being perpendicular to the ion velocity. The magnetic field has magnitude 0.40T. The electric field is first adjusted so that the ions pass straight through without deflection.
(a) Calculate the speed of the ions under this condition if the electric field magnitude is 1.0×104Vm−1.
(b) The electric field is now switched off while the magnetic field remains unchanged. Find the radius of the circular path now followed by the ions.
