Problem
(a) A generating station is located far from the load centre it serves. State two practical reasons, other than safety, why the voltage is first raised to a very high value at the station before the electrical power enters the overhead transmission line.
(b) Using only logical reasoning based on the relationship among power, current and resistance, deduce how the power dissipated as heat in a transmission line depends qualitatively on the magnitude of the sending-end voltage when the line resistance and the power to be delivered remain fixed.
(c) Explain why a step-down transformer is always placed close to the consumers even when the delivered power level is modest.
