Problem

A long, straight aluminium strip 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} long is fixed along the north–south direction on insulating supports in a region where two mutually perpendicular uniform magnetic fields exist simultaneously: B1=0.20 TB_{1}=0.20\,\text{T} acting vertically upward and B2=0.15 TB_{2}=0.15\,\text{T} acting due east. (a) A current of 25 A25\,\text{A} is sent through the strip from south to north. Determine the direction of the net force acting on the strip and describe qualitatively how the two magnetic fields together influence this direction. (b) The current is now reversed while both magnetic fields remain the same. Predict the new direction of the force and compare its magnitude with that in part (a). (c) Next, keeping the original current direction (south to north), B1B_{1} is reversed while B2B_{2} is unchanged. State how the direction and magnitude of the force will change. (d) Finally, both the current and B1B_{1} are reversed simultaneously, while B2B_{2} is still eastward. Work out the resulting direction of the force and comment on whether its magnitude differs from that in part (a).
