Problem
Two blocks of masses m1 and m2 are connected by a light, inextensible string that passes over a small, smooth pulley fixed to the ceiling. The system is released from rest in air.
(i) Draw a clearly labelled free-body diagram for each block.
(ii) For the case m2>m1, write the algebraic expression for the net force acting on each block along its line of motion.
(iii) Give a reason why the magnitude of tension is the same in both vertical segments of the string.
(iv) State which block moves downward and which moves upward immediately after release, giving your reasoning based on the free-body diagrams.
